Deployment story
Resort Wi-Fi over existing copper
Extend resort Wi-Fi over existing copper wiring where mountains make new cabling and wireless links difficult.
← All stories and scenariosThe challenge
Build around the work.
A resort needed better connectivity across a property where new trenching was difficult and mountainous terrain complicated point-to-point radio links. Existing copper runs offered a way to reach more locations without making new civil works the starting point.
How the solution fits together
VDSL2 DSLAM → qualified copper pair → VDSL2-to-Ethernet bridge → correctly powered Aruba hospitality access point
Products and software
- VDSL2 DSLAM and compatible subscriber bridges
- Replace the older DSL access equipment and carry the Ethernet backhaul over suitable existing copper. Equipment selection follows line testing.
- HPE Aruba Networking hospitality access points ↗
- Provide the guest-room or local wireless service after the VDSL2 link is converted to Ethernet, with a suitable local PoE or DC power source.
- Aruba Instant or controller-based management ↗
- Choose the enterprise operating model that fits the property's scale, roaming and management requirements.
- HPE Networking Instant On ↗
- A separate product line for smaller sites with simpler requirements; select it for that role rather than mixing it into an enterprise controller deployment.
- HPE Aruba Networking ClearPass Policy Manager ↗
- For enterprise Aruba deployments, connect guest onboarding and staff or device authentication to role-based network access policies. Validate the chosen AP and software integration for the site.
What we do
- Qualify each copper run, identify line impairments and establish the achievable backhaul capacity.
- Install compatible VDSL2 endpoints, provide the access-point power budget and separate guest and operational traffic.
- Survey coverage and roaming, tune the selected Aruba platform, and use ClearPass in the enterprise design to connect guest, staff and device access to the appropriate network policies.
Why it matters
Put existing infrastructure back to work and expand usable wireless coverage while reducing the amount of new trenching required. Spend the upgrade budget on the locations, guest experience and operating capabilities that matter most.
L8DT services behind the solution
How we verify it
Measure line stability and usable throughput at each endpoint, then test Wi-Fi coverage, roaming and simultaneous client use. Set expectations from the actual copper length, condition, noise and power availability. Where ClearPass is included, test successful and rejected authentication, guest onboarding and the resulting access policy.
