Practical checklist

Identity and MFA readiness checklist

Map the important access decisions before changing policy. Use this checklist to identify the owners, applications, privileged paths and removal checks that an identity review needs to cover.

The challenge

MFA is one part of the access journey.

An identity review also needs to cover approvals, privileged access, application behavior and account removal. Record what has been observed and what still needs a check.

Work through these checks

  1. Inventory workforce, service, privileged and emergency identities.
  2. Identify the applications and authentication paths that matter.
  3. Record MFA enrollment, recovery and exception rules.
  4. Separate privileged access from ordinary daily accounts.
  5. Test a permitted sign-in and an intended denial.
  6. Approve an emergency-access owner and recovery procedure.
  7. Review device requirements and incompatible applications before rollout.
  8. Rehearse removal of access across the agreed applications.
  9. Assign periodic access and exception review.
  10. Retain a change/rollback plan and acceptance results.

Questions to bring to discovery

  • Who authorizes access changes?
  • Which legacy app or device can block rollout?
  • What evidence shows removal actually worked?
